Damn…this book was HOT!!!

It’s been a while since I read a MMF book, and I really missed this feeling. This is my first MMF book that I reviewed, it’s a debut book of the author, and from my opinion, it did a really good job.

I’ve read in the past books with vampires and I’m a big fan of them.

But…I think I’m old fashion way when it comes to vampires. The story of this book looks a lot like the Vampire Diaries tv series, but in some ways, it doesn’t.The story is about two vampire brothers, twins actually, who both want the same mortal girl. One of them is the evil one and one of them is the good one. I fell for the bad guy, obviously. 😛

This is my first read from this author and I didn’t know what to expect, but if you are looking for some steamy hot sexy stuff, this book is not the one, so move along. For the steamy hot sexy stuff, you have to put your imagination to work… So just romance.

My initial review was different. I was harsher on it, but reading book 2 immediately, make me change my mind. The luck was that kept my review, and not posting it…So back to our book and review…

The book starts with Ava…a young college student who wants to be an architect.

Imagini pentru megan fox

She works part time in one fine restaurant, she lives with her best friend and party with her. One day, before one of her exams, she decides to study in a coffee shop, but when she sees how her time flown, she runs out running right into one hell of a “Sex God”.
Obviously, the attraction between them was off the charts and more important… was mutual.

Rhett…is one of the sexiest eligible bachelor’s from Boston and New York.

Eric Belanger | NEXT Canada

He is one rich sexy guy, tall, well build, gorgeous with sexy and mischievous blue eyes. He knows what he wants, and what he wants is what he gets… No matter what. He wants and likes control, he craves control in every aspect of his life. But when he meets Ava, all his world and life turns upside down.

He’s a guy with a tormented past. She is a girl with trust and relationships issues. What is going to happen with and between them?

At the beginning of the book, I was like…

I didn’t like several aspects in the book. The book, or at least at the beginning of it, was full of boring details. Too many unimportant details about decoration and stuff related with architecture… In my opinion.
Rhett is a little too much insta “in love”. It doesn’t say it, but you as a reader see it, feel it. The action, the connection between them is too fast, too sudden. Too overall.

It would have been better if it was more concentrate on them, as a couple, how they build their relationship slowly. I love insta love, but this was way insta. Another moment that I didn’t like was their first moment as a couple. I not telling anything about this one, because I don’t want to ruin the joy for other readers.

What I love about the book…

❤
Rhett is a possessive, protective, dominant, control freak Son of a Beach. Ava defies him every moment, but of course, she doesn’t win, she just pisses him off more.
I’m not judging the book because is just romance. No… I love romance.

Towards the end of the book, the book got better.

The book got more concentrate on the characters. And especially that final part from Rhett’s POV. I loved Rhett’s sister and can’t wait to read her story.

Well, this second book got unexpectedly good and better from all points of view, in comparison with the first one. The writing got much better…In my opinion. It got more interesting, pleasant, suspenseful, funnier, much concentrate…

Even much hotter… 😛

.

I didn’t expect that but I loved it. I wanted more sexy action.Anyway back to the book and the review…The book continues the action from book one…but after 3 years.

Ava… moved to L.A

Imagini pentru megan fox

Works as an architect and lives alone. She isn’t happy but she gets herself busy in work to forget and not think of anything, especially to Rhett.

Rhett, on the other hand, had to spend this 3 years trying to correct all the mistakes.

Imagini pentru eric belanger

Removing all the evil and hoping that one day he and Ava will be together again. He still loves her and wants her with all his heart. He will not give up at her, at them. And now he has his perfect chance since his sister Valerie is moving to L.A for college.

What really happened 3 years ago? Was it Rhett so cold that he couldn’t be there for Ava when she most needed him? Will Ava forgive Rhett and give them another chance?

As I said at the beginning I liked this book way more than the first one.

Growing up the outcast in an infamous family of psychics, Nate Black never learned how to control his empath abilities. Then after five years without contact, his estranged twin turns up dead in New York City. The claim of suicide doesn’t ring true, especially when a mysterious vision tells Nate it was murder. A perfectly clear image has been on my mind since I started reading this story.

Probably the first image you will find if you google “NY piers”. Beautiful (of course, it’s New York) but nothing special unless you are being transported to that place while reading the first chapter of Insight. In that moment Santino got me. I loved the idea. I really liked that first vision and how it dragged me into this new world.

All my reading has been conditioned by Theo’s “first appearance”. And even if Theo wasn’t the best person, neither the best brother, I’ve been mourning him all the way. He’s been present in my head every single page. But the main reason that made me loved Insight was the magistral mix of nostalgia, darkness and the obscure sadness covering all the story.

The world building in this first installment of The Community is captivating and fast paced. The universe Santino describes is totally absorbent and original.

Everything has a dark atmosphere that you can almost breathe. But that darkish background, mixed with the simple and direct to the point dialogues, makes the setting and the story itself easy, intense and more attractive. And I loved it because this book succeeded where others didn’t. This novel transported me to a place, to a different world. That’s the magic of books, and this one did that for me. During all my reading I was visualizing the story as a movie and not any random movie, but one I would truly enjoy.

Nathaniel Black is our narrator, in this new Series by Santino Hassell.

Lucky Blue Smith:

He is a psychic who read paranormal M/M romance. He is an empath who listens Japanese rock metal. He is a social unskilled guy who has been bullied all his life. Bullied for being gay, and bullied for being a “Black”.That’s Nate, ladies and gentleman, my lovely and adored Nate.

So, this beautiful character who lives in Santino’s personal Village of the Damned  (bleached people included) meets a New Yorker called Trent.

Sarcastic, beautiful and apparently supernormal Trent….

The couple starts a journey that takes them from Texas to New York (the word “journey” is used here in both ways, literally and metaphorically). We don’t get to know Trent’s POV in this story, but I didn’t miss it too much because you get to know him through Nate’s eyes.

In this setting Santino’s use of the dialogues is vital. They are the “lung” insufflating air in this story. They are the axis since we all are Nate and we need to know trough him (thoughts and conversations) who the rest is, what they want… At first, I thought some of the interactions were a bit forced but everything flows naturally once I accustomed to the rhythm and the writing.

I wouldn’t say theirs in insta-love because it’s not (there is no love implied at first) but they do connect instantly, they bond since the beginning. Trent trusts in Nate’s word, he believes in him.  He is Noah’s partner in crime or, in this case, I should say, his partner solving the crime (he calls himself “the amusing sidekick“). And they are super cute together.
But I must say that even if there are love and hot sex in this book, the love story between Noah and Trent is not the epicenter of this book. Insight is the set up for The Community, the scenario for the whole series so I could say that this first installment has in it a huge dose of paranormal mystery with, of course, the basis of a good MM romance. And it didn’t disappoint me at all.

I’m really hoping book two will follow the footsteps of this one.

I’m not giving away anything substantial about the plot.

I’ve preferred to discover this book by myself and I’m giving you the same opportunity. I’ll just say I was absorbed by the simple (and also magical) narrative. I was completely into it at the end of chapter one (I loved the end of chapter one).

The characters in Insight are perfectly defined even if they have no voice. Noah is the deepest character, sure, but the book is full of great and intriguing characters. The lack of other POVs it’s probably a need in the story because this way is easier for the plot to thrive and for the thriller to prosper.

The only snag that I found is that, at one point, I was ahead in the “investigation”. I was solving the puzzle before Nate, and yelling at him to fit the clues in the big picture… but anyway, I love him and I´m sure he has forgiven me already for all the presumptuous “I knew it“.

In the last three weeks I have read, 3 completely different genres by Santino Hassel: Sports Romance, Cyberlove, and now this Paranormal/Thriller novel.

I can say without any doubt that he knows how to write whatever he wants, that’s for sure and I will happily wait for any book he throws in my way. 😀imageedit_36_4496991228

Joey James has given up on his ‘Prince Charming’. There is no such thing, he needs to be realistic about his chances of finding a lasting relationship. A chance encounter with a former school mate at the local grocery store changes everything-maybe.
Before Joey can decide what to do about it, he is swept into a terrifying scheme. Forced into helping a dangerous stranger in exchange for his family’s safety, Joey begins a perilous journey into the criminal underbelly of Skagit. He will do whatever is needed to protect his family.

Buck Swanfeldt had a secret crush on Joey James in high school. Buck’s social anxiety and two-year age difference made it impossible for him to approach Joey then. Life since high school has been challenging, and lonely. Eight years later, fate brings them together and Buck decides to act. He utterly fails. He would have left it at that, except fate seems to be intent on pushing Joey in his direction, and clearly, Joey needs someone at his back.

Dark, sordid secrets hiding in Skagit are bubbling to the surface, danger lurks in unexpected places. Buck has never been anyone’s hero but something about Joey has him throwing caution to the wind. Together the two men take on a dangerous force greater than themselves. But sometimes our worst enemy is ourselves.

Everyone has secrets. Secrets that should never be brought into the light of day.

Secrets that are lurking under the surface of a small town and threaten to unravel its countryside idyll and ideal world.Secrets two men involuntarily participate in, which not only causes quite a stir but will change their life forever.

7388-headlines_bad_hand_bw.630w.tn.jpg (630×315)

For Joey James, the nurse we already met in the previous book Storm Season, two things almost happen at once: a random encounter at a grocery store with a former schoolmate who never even was on his radar, but whom he suddenly cannot get out of his head and an alarming picture on the windshield of his car meant to blackmail him into helping out a criminal individual or otherwise his family would come to harm. Both are things Joey is in over his head, but it soon becomes apparent that the former will – and is even bound and determined to- help him coping with the latter.

Hazel Eyes

Joey, the nestling of a big family, is a caring person by nature. That is the reason why he will be exploited over and over again by his much older siblings to take care of his parents. That is the reason why he takes in a stray, although there a no dogs allowed in his apartment. That is also the reason why he loves his job at the hospital, which causes him lately more trouble than he prefers.

“He’d been thinking with his heart, with the part of him that hated pain and suffering, with the part of him that fiercely protected those he loved. It wasn’t stupid to care. That’s how he was built: he cared, often too much and too soon.”

But Joey is lonely. The prospects to find someone who wants to share your life as a gay young man in a small town are pretty rare. When he meets a shy and socially awkward man who apparently knows him from yore and who immediately takes flight after a moment of embarrassment, he is curious about the conundrum that is Buck Swanfeldt, owner of the local garage. Fate seems to be intent on bringing both men together and after bumping into each other repeatedly, Buck slowly but surely becomes a safe haven for Joey.

As much as I loved Joey, it was Buck I loved more.

Maybe because I could totally relate to him, being more on the shy side and socially awkward myself. I know how it would feel to screw up one’s courage to address someone you had a crush on for years. I could virtually feel his embarrassment, but I admired him for doing something that would have been a milestone in his life, but I could also understand his need to bolt when sliding into an awkward situation.

Buck always felt a bit like an outcast. He learned early on in his life that appearance is everything. His parents always pretended outwardly to be a loving family, while a look behind the curtain would have revealed a father who liked to bully his son at every chance he got and a mother who stood idly by.

“Buck learned early to be seen and not heard, to listen for the undercurrents, to be very careful how he presented to his family and to Skagit. He figured they would never accept him for who he was, only who they wanted him to be.”

I loved Buck for his fortitude to make something of his life, despite the low self-esteem his parents conveyed at him at every turn. He is the gentle giant you tend to underestimate and who never recognizes himself how gorgeous he really is.

Travis Fimmel...just drag me off to the cave.

And it was far from easy. Buck also lived constantly in fear of ending up like his father, but his inner strength helps him to acknowledge that he needs professional helps to overcome his social anxiety and to get a chance at a love-filled life. Oh, and I loved him for grabbing the chance at love when it presented itself…

It was great to be back in Skagit. Elle Keaton creates an atmosphere that makes you not only just read the story, but feel like being part of it, like being there. Well, I could have done without all the rain and snow, but that just conveyed a feeling of reality. 😉 And the great characters did one more thing to make it authentic. I loved the humor in the story and the tentative pace the author brought the relationship between Joey and Buck forward. This might have happened a bit at the expense of steam, but it did not bother me one bit.

Joey and Buck’s relationship was just sweet and both are the perfect match.

The mystery part that forged a bridge between the first two books in this series was wrapped up nicely, but it took a bit of a backseat regarding the romance and all in all it was the perfect combination of both.

There are also a lot of interesting side characters I would love to read more about.

Some of them I already shipped so hard, I can hardly wait to see if I am right and I wonder if -no,…

…I hope– all of them will get their own book…

I have been curious about Cam, after meeting him in book 1. I really wanted to know what was up with this seemingly sweet top and his boss John.

Cam has been working as a top for “Blue Boys” for some time. He is the nice guy that always gets asked to top the new bottoms, but lately…

He has kinda lost his way…

The only thing he feels he has going for him at the moment is his weird and unhealthy relationship with his (asshole) boss John.

Things change though when he meets Sasha, a BMX’er, who has nothing to do with the porn industry.

3326462.gif (500×281)

These two hit it off right away, but Sasha pushes, when they become too close.  Sasha has some issues though, and soon it will become clear that they have more in common than they thought.

Ub5uB7Z.jpg (312×319):

I liked Cam and how open was about his porn career, but just like in the previous book, I wanted to know more about Cam. These books aren’t very deep and I also have to say that they are quite light on the romance. I think I would have liked them better as full novels.

For those who have read book 1…yes there, we do get some Levi and Sonny…HOT.

Levi Ramone entered the gay porn market for one reason, and one reason only: he needed the cash to pay his momma’s spiraling gambling debts.

Seven years later, he’s a veteran with a reputation as one of Blue Boy Studio’s most ruthless tops, and when his boss suggests it’s time for a change, he finds himself staring down the barrel of a gun. Figuratively speaking, at least.

Enter Sonny Valentine, a go-go dancer at Blue’s sister club, Silver’s. Levi has secretly admired Sonny from afar for years, but there’s a problem. He can’t stand Sonny and the feeling is entirely mutual. When Levi learns Sonny is to play the third part in a scene he already considers his worst nightmare, he figures things can’t get any worse.

Levi has been working as a pornstar for “Blue Boys” for some time now. He became a pornstar because he needed the money. His father committed suicide and his mother is an awful drunk with plenty of debts, that needed to be paid off.

Getting to have sex for money, seems like and an easy and enjoyable way to make your money…right.

Levi has always been a top, and not a very gentle one either. He has never given his actions much thought though. That is until Sonny, a fellow porn star, and dancer comments on Levi’s skills as a top.

These two don’t start out o the right foot, but when Levi is scheduled to have his first time bottoming filmed…

Sonny is the one who steps up and tries to help the man out.

Of course, there is sex in this book, I mean it’s about the porn industry, but that wasn’t all that this book was about.  Levi had plenty of issues outside of his work, that needed his attention, but still with everything going on in his head…he managed to really listen to Sonny.

This is a short book though, so don’t expect anything deep character wise. To be honest, I would have liked to know more about Sonny. Everything is in Levi’s pov and I didn’t really understand why Sonny did the things he did and how he was actually feeling.

I absolutely loved Amy Lane’s “Johnnies” series, which this can be compared to a little bit. Though this series is way less angsty and not as deep. I think it would be perfect for those who have avoided the “Johnnies” series, because of the angst.

I am very much looking forward to reading book 2. 😀

They say you can’t go home again, Adam Klay doesn’t intend to until the death of his father, a famous artist, forces his return to Skagit, Washington. Cleaning up his father’s chaotic life was never on Adam’s bucket list. Worse, Adam finds himself inexplicably drawn to the elusive, terminally-clumsy, gorgeous, Micah Ryan. No way is he getting involved with someone from his hometown; he’s always insisted the best view of Skagit was in his rearview mirror.

Micah Ryan has been coasting on auto-pilot since his family was killed in a car accident a decade earlier. He runs a web business and has an irritable cat. He hardly leaves his house, unless it is for his afternoon espresso. His world tips upside down when Adam Klay rolls into town. For the first time in years, he feels alive. Unfortunately, Micah’s return to the living has been noticed and is not appreciated.

Someone has a secret. Someone is exploiting the vulnerable youth population in Skagit. Teenagers are disappearing, young women turning up dead, the dirty secrets of Skagit are surfacing.

An auspicious start to a new series…

@n3fariovs

… is part of his job, but he is also confronted with it where he expected it least of all…

Dedicated to his job, but worn out FBI Agent Adam Klay is called from the middle of a crime scene to return to his small hometown in order to settle the assets of his deceased estranged father. To say being back generates mixed feelings in him would be quite an understatement and he clutches at every straw to shuffle out of the situation of dealing with the estate and facing up to his past.

One of these distractions is Micah Ryan…

A totally adorbs, clumsy as hell man with an aura of sadness, who stirs up feelings in Adam he was not prepared for. No, he did not expect to find murder in this hick town of his youth, but he expected to find love even less.

Matthew Gray Gubler - From criminal minds. Niccccce :)

Micah is also completely taken by surprise when he discovers that he cannot get the stranger with the piercing expression out of his head, who evokes such intense emotions in him he never experienced before. Even after a stretch of ten years he is not really able to get over the death of his family due to a car crash and lives more or less the life of a recluse. Normally, opening up to someone is not easy for him, but there is something about Adam that makes him throw caution to the wind and want to trust this guy.

When bodies are piling up, when it seems like there would be more to this sleepy town than meets the eye and Micah is put in the crosshairs of somebody who attempts on his life, Adam is forced to give his all to keep him safe, especially when it becomes clear that all events seem to be connected somehow.

I had my ups and downs with Storm Season, but overall it was an enjoyable read and a promising debut from a new author.

I particularly loved her dry sense of humor and the snark made me laugh out loud quite often. This book is rather long, but it did not feel this way. The chapters are short with alternating POVs of Adam and Micah and this contributes to giving this story a fast-paced aspect. There happens quite a lot in this book and as for me, it was sometimes a bit too much telling and not enough showing, but the embroilments and the mystery part are still nicely done.

What dimmed my enjoyment a bit was one of my favorite pet peeves…

Guess what! Yes, insta-love.

Since authors use it quite often, I slowly but surely have the impression that it is just poor me who never experienced this kind of phenomenon and therefore cannot relate to it in any sort. This kind of obsession with each other after bumping into one another two or three times and two nights together is simply not realistic for me. I get insta-attraction, yes, but insta-love? Not so much…

To be fair, though, I have to admit that Adam and Micah are good -not to say perfect- for each other to get over their past. Adam helps Micah coming out of his shell and on the other hand, Micah helps Adam finding back to his true self. He helps him appreciating himself and his past and even this dump of a hometown he tried to escape from ages ago. Accomplishing that in another –slower– way would have made it just more plausible for me.

With the case not really solved yet and a killer still on the loose, I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
