To protect and serve…. All Vance Connelly ever wanted to do was continue his family’s tradition and join the Tampa Police Department, but his dreams were crushed the day he woke with the enhanced mark on his face. After years of struggling to adjust to life as an enhanced human, by a stroke of luck, he met Talon Valdez and became a proud member of the FBI’s Human Enhanced Rescue Organization.
Samuel “Angel” Piper is eager to leave his DEA undercover work behind as he joins the HERO team as Vance’s regular human partner. But Sam’s painful past is ever present, just below the surface of the life he has built for himself as an ambitious young agent. When the team investigates rumors of a new drug using enhanced blood, the case’s mysterious connection to Sam threatens not just his life but Vance’s.
Trust doesn’t come easy for Sam, but Vance is willing to fight to convince his partner that the strength of his heart might be the salvation they both need.
I have been a fan of this series since I started the first book “Five Minutes Longer“ and I have been a fan of Vance just as long. Which means I was very excited about this one… It pains me to say that my expectations for this one were not completely met…
I think the biggest issue for me was the romance part of the story…as in there wasn’t much of a romance, to begin with. Now I don’t need a lot of hearts and flowers in my books to enjoy them, but in this case, it didn’t even feel like the MC’s like each other all that much. Well one of them didn’t anyway. It all felt very one-sided.
I didn’t really care much for Sam’s character or his excuses for hurting Vance. And as much as I loved Vance in all the other books…he just wasn’t the same in this one…
What I have loved most about this series, since the beginning, is the whole “enhanced” part…It is so intriguing to me and I always get so curious as to which abilities everyone has. Those are my favorite parts of the books and I am so sad that those parts felt a bit glossed over in this book.
Even though the background story had some element of ” enhanced abilities” there wasn’t much elaboration of anything. I wanted to know more about all Vance’s abilities and his medical tests and why he was healing so fast all of a sudden… I didn’t get it though and that’s too bad because all those “superpowers” are what made this series one of my favorites. Unfortunately, we don’t always get what we want.
What I did really enjoy was seeing everyone I have come to love again. It was great to see how far Finn has really come. I really missed all of them and for me, their friendship and the bond between them all was the best part if this book.
So, even though this one wasn’t exactly what I expected…I am still very much looking forward to the next one, (these books should not be read as standalone)…which I hope will be Eli and Daniels book. Now that sounds like a very interesting story to me. 😉
I recommend this series to those who enjoy sci-fi, action, and man on man loving!
