Talon Valdez knew when he transformed into an enhanced human, his life and his dreams were finished. Reviled, mistrusted, and often locked away, the enhanced were viewed as monsters, despised by the public, and never trusted to serve in the military or any law enforcement agency.
Years later he gets a chance to set up a task force of enhanced to serve in the FBI, but with one proviso: each enhanced must partner with a regular human.
Finn Mayer dreamed of joining the FBI from the time he was fourteen and made every possible sacrifice to make it happen, including living with his selfish mother and bullying, homophobic brother and never having a boyfriend. But his undiagnosed dyslexia stopped his aspirations dead in their tracks. His last chance is to partner with Talon, an enhanced with deadly abilities who doesn’t trust regular humans with their secrets and wants Finn to fail.
Four weeks to prove himself to the team. Four weeks for the team to prove itself to the public. And when another group threatens their success—and their lives are at stake—four weeks for them to survive.
This book really took me by surprise. I absolutely loved it!!!
Guess I am a huge sucker for badass men with superpowers!!This book kind of reminded me of the “Thirds” series, though it was completely different. For one…it’s not about shifters…It’s about “Enhanced Humans”.
What are “Enhanced Humans”, you say??
Well, they are boys, who have yet to hit puberty, who wake up one day, with a special ability (think X-men) and a mark on their face. There aren’t very many enhanced around, and the reason why and how this genetic condition manifests in some children is still unknown. What isn’t unknown, is that the enhanced are treated very poorly by the rest of the human population. As is often the case…people fear and hate what they don’t know…
Parents literally kick their kids out when they suddenly bare a mark. These kids are sent to “homes” and some with very special/dangerous powers are even send to “kiddie prison”.
The thought alone made me sick!!!
Things are about to change though.
A part of the government wants to change the way people see the “enhanced”. This is where the FBI comes in. The idea is to form a team of enhanced with human partners.
Finn has wanted to join the FBI since he was a young boy. His dyslexia, however, makes it hard for him. His grades aren’t as high as they should be, even though Finn is extremely smart. He doesn’t just give up though and he works his ass off. He needs to get away from his bitch mother and asshole brother.
When he gets a rejection letter, all his hopes are crushed.
So imagine his surprise, when he gets a phone call saying there has been a mistake and to report in at the Florida field office.
In Florida, it is explained to him that he is to be part of a human/enhanced team. There are 5 enhanced members already…and Finn is about to be the first human one. He is supposed to be partners with Talon, who makes it very clear right from the start that he doesn’t want a human partner. In fact, non of them want a regular human on the team.
So they try to make things hard on Finn…they want him to fail.
But Finn…he has come this far and he isn’t new to rejection. He is not about to just give up. If all things fail…maybe he will still have a chance in Quantico.
Talon was a real asshole at first. I wanted to hate him, but we all know how much I love assholes… 😛 He and his team don’t trust regular humans and with all that, they have been through…I understood where they were coming from. Finn is hard to resist though and it’s even harder not to like the guy. Talon especially has a very hard time ignoring Finn. One by one they slowly fall for Finn’s charming and sweet personality.
Their distrust slowly changes to protectiveness.
Talon can’t fight his attraction to Finn and the more he gets to know him…the harder he falls. These two were great together, though there was a lot of miscommunication…or rather Talon’s “foot in mouth syndrome”…I really liked Finn the most. He might have just been a “regular” human but he was the strongest character among them all. He was also pretty funny. 😉
“I mean,” Finn continued, deciding to go for broke, “you’re my team leader. Don’t you have to check all my injuries?”
“You hurt your dick?”Talon drawled.
Finn swallowed, drawn to Talon’s full lips. “It’s very painful. I think you ought to check it out.”
I really enjoyed this one and all the side characters were awesome !! This book ends on an HFN but thankfully book 2 is already out. 😛
Talon’s deadly abilities are spiraling out of control. Desperate to keep Finn safe, Talon struggles to protect the man he loves with all his heart, and not become the greatest risk to Finn’s life.
Finn has no choice but to offer himself as bait for the evil forces kidnapping enhanced children, facing danger he is untrained and unprepared for, and he is having to do it alone.
Does Talon have one last fight in him? Will he slay everyone who wants to destroy Finn and the team, or will he finally discover that to defeat their enemy and the ultimate threat, the biggest battle he has to face is one with himself?
After finishing the first book in this series, I was so freaking excited to start this second one!!
It was as good as I expected it to be!!
Now first things first. You have to read book 1 before you read this one. Even I read them in order so that’s saying something 😛 They are not stand alone books. I absolutely love this awesome team of “enhanced” and one regular yet amazing human.
The team is still going strong and so are Talon and Finn. There are some issues though.. Talon is struggling with his abilities. Things are changing for him and he doesn’t quite know how to deal…yet
Finn has his own issues…most having to do with Talon. It becomes more and more clear to Finn that Talon doesn’t really trust him…or more important…believe in him.
The more doubt Talon shows…the more Finn feels like he needs to prove himself, which causes him to get into trouble more than once. This didn’t bother me because I totally got where Finn was coming from. He needed Talon to trust and believe in him but mostly…he needed to believe in himself.
It also made for some nice groveling scenes from Talon. 😛
Talon, he is falling in love and he doesn’t know how to deal with all these new feelings. It takes him a long time to even admit to himself how he really feels about Finn. He is so protective of Finn and he just can’t stand the fact of Finn getting hurt. Even though he went about it all wrong…I still thought it was very endearing. 😉
The steam was definitely hotter in this one …yowza!!
“Love how you swallow me,” Talon whispered. “Take me right in all the way. Made for me.”
The background story was awesome as well. Finn going undercover as a 17 year old “enhanced” boy made me laugh my ass off!!
“You need to change his age boss,” Vance said in amazement. “There is no way he looks more than twelve, thirteen tops.” “I shave dickhead.” Finn glared.”
There was less action than in the first book but the emotional moments were plentiful…which I think was perfect for this second installment. I needed some tender and sweet moments between Talon and Finn and I got exactly what I wanted!!
“Never again. I am never letting you go. You are the best part of me.”
The next book…
I really hope there will be a next book….will hopefully be about Gael and his new regular human partner.
Now I really can’t wait to read about those two!!!
