~Excerpt~

Excerpt

The rain pelted down as he made his way up the ridge, thick sheets that obscured his vision and made the terrain slippery and treacherous. Overhead, a large black bird with a colorful beak swooped in, almost sending Ben skidding into a ravine.

He whistled low, a deliberate pattern, one of the team’s signals. He repeated the sound as he approached where Maddox was supposed to be. An answering signal came from a dense thicket of green vegetation.

“It’s me. Hold your fire,” Ben called as he slipped into the mass of trees and roots. The plants here were nothing like the ones back home—giant heart-shaped leaves and bright rubbery flowers that almost looked bird- or insect-like. The trees had massive, visible roots covered with moss, and were connected by thick vines that could easily be mistaken for a deadly snake.

Below him, he could see the encampment, SEALs scurrying around. The injured hostage and Issacson, their wounded radio man, were carried out, which had to mean the chopper was close. Time to haul ass. “Maddox?”

“Here.” Maddox slid out of the shadows, rifle at the ready, just as Ben had expected. “Com’s down for you guys too?”

“Yup. Chopper’s coming in. LT sent me to bring you in. No time to waste. Issacson took a bullet, but he’s stable, and one of the hostages is in bad shape. Possible hostiles escaped, but Rogers and company are hunting them down.”

“Got it. Lead the way.” Maddox let Ben take point as they made their way down the ridge. They had to skirt the edge of a steep drop, every muddy step cautious even as they needed to make haste.

Crack.

Whoosh.

Two things happened at the same instant—gunfire broke out above them and a chopper approached, engine noise making it hard to track the source of the shots. But Maddox was already on it, crouching low, rifle ready. Another shot whistled over their heads and Maddox returned fire. They both left the trail and headed into the brush, intent on finding the hostiles.

The chopper circled low, then went back up. Fuck. The chopper was struggling to land in the encampment clearing, which meant the next pass was critical. Still staying low and gun ready, he inched forward. No more gunfire had followed Maddox’s, but that didn’t mean he could let his guard down for a second.

The chopper circled again, but the terrain had shifted and Ben could no longer see the encampment beneath them.

Fuck.” Maddox never cursed, so Ben whipped his head around just in time to see Maddox slipping off the poor excuse for a trail.

Ben scrambled on his stomach, stretching out an arm, trying to catch Maddox. “Grab on.”

“No. Don’t—” Maddox didn’t get the sentence out before they were both tumbling down the muddy incline, heading straight for the ravine that lay between them and the encampment. Ben tried to slow their descent but his attempt to grab at some vines only resulted in the foliage following them down.

Maddox screamed, a legitimate yell that chilled Ben to his boots because Maddox never lost composure. Ever. Ben had once watched Wizard put sutures in Maddox’s scalp while Maddox hummed, never dropping his tune.

Ben grabbed for him again and— Pop. Ben’s arm pulled at an unnatural angle, caught up in a tree root and not Maddox’s strong grip as he’d intended. He wrenched loose but the damage was already done, and still he slid, mud carrying him faster, rocks and vegetation raining down after them.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.” Ben’s arm and shoulder were on fire and he was still moving, sliding, nothing working—

Boom. The bottom of the ravine arrived without warning, a muddy bog that sucked him down, but it was hardly a soft landing, rocks and plants poking at him. His arm had him cursing, eyes watering. He’d seen Rogers dislocate a shoulder last year in the grinder obstacle course, and at the time he’d rolled his eyes at how Rogers had carried on. He had a sick feeling that he’d done the same or worse to his shoulder, and he got the urge to cry and howl.

“Oh fuck.” His stomach heaved and he barely made it to his side before he threw up from the pain. He turned his head and almost lost his guts again. Maddox lay a few feet from him, leg at an unnatural angle, blood dripping from his head, helmet nowhere to be seen. Not talking or cursing.

Clawing at the rocks with his good arm, Ben pulled himself closer, looking for the telltale rise and fall of Maddox’s chest—and not seeing it.

“You are not fucking with me,” Ben growled. “Mad? Come on, man.”

Still nothing, not even a ghost of movement across Maddox’s pale lips. Terror, nothing Ben had ever known before, froze his veins, made him lightheaded from more than just the fall. He refused, utterly refused to live in a world where Maddox wasn’t okay.

“Maddox. Horvat.” He shook his shoulder, cursing under his breath. No, no, no.

Whoosh. A chopper—the chopper—flew overhead, much too far to spot them down this ravine, and heading away from them.

Sputter. Maddox let out a mighty cough. It might have been the most beautiful sound Ben had ever heard, because it meant Maddox was here, that he was fighting, and Ben started to laugh with relief until Maddox spoke. “Heck. They’re leaving us.”

They always say that the greatest things come in small packages and in this case, I totally agree!!

the-best-things-come-in-small-packages-2.png (600×700):

This book may be short, but it comes with all kinds of delicious and funny goodness. 😀

First, let me start by saying, that this book can not be read as a stand alone. It’s a collection of stories about Rowe and Noah, so their book should be read before this one.

This series works with a continuing storyline, so it should definitely be read in order. No worries for those of you who haven’t started this series yet.

You have all these wonderful books to look forward too and you are definitely in for a treat. 😉

Those of you who have read the previous book, know all about Rowe and Noah. I think they are the funniest couple out of all of them and they certainly brought the fun in this book!!

“Peering around Noah, he noticed that he wasn’t wearing briefs with a Santa face, but a jockstrap with red straps accentuating Noah’s perfect ass. There was even a small sprig of mistletoe fastened to the back strap, just above Noah’s crack.”

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor laughing + gif

One thing is for sure…these two definitely know how to have a good time. They are also very good at setting the pages on fire!

“I need you in me fucking bare. Gotta feel it when you come.”

I absolutely adored these little stories. It was sweet, funny and hot and I loved the fact that Rowe was finally at peace and allowed himself to really move on and forward…

Now the big question…why not 5 full stars??

Well for one, I gave the novels 5 stars, because there was so much awesomeness in those, but also because this book lacked one very important thing…well at least for me that is. 😛

HOLLIS!!!

Thankfully we still have Ian and Hollis’ short story to look forward to, which should be published sometime this summer.

I seriously can’t wait…but I will have to. 😛 😀imageedit_44_8150275859

This book deserves 4 exquisite and yummy Maddox’s cupcakes.

 :

Though this is book 3 in the “Out of Uniform” series by Annabeth Albert, it could be perfectly read as a standalone. In fact, “On Point” is my first book in this series and I enjoyed it so much, that I’m gonna read the first two as prequels.

There is something beautiful in the way this story starts, with Maddox and Ben taking care of each other in a mission that has gone down. The author shows us a protective Ben, a worried Maddox, and the solid bound both share.
Just watching them interact is enough to know there is trust there. There are loyalty and reliance.

And, of course, there are feelings.

” He couldn’t imagine a team without Maddox on it, couldn’t imagine a world where they didn’t head out together”

As we are witnessing these two men having each other’s back, both are remembering the past, so the present is interspersed with great flashbacks that show the reader how they met, how they bonded and how one night changed everything between them…

Maddox and Ben have been friends for 12 years and theirs is a fantastic friends-to-lovers story. Intense, deep and sweet.

“They weren’t a couple. Couldn’t be a couple. Simple truth was that he had no idea  how to be the man Maddox needed and deserved, and no amount of near-death experiences could change that”

Maddox is adorable, he is a tough navy seal who loves to bake and has a lovely incapacity of course. But most of all, he is a guy in love who has been repressing truths and feelings for a decade now.

Ben is harder, tougher, bitter and more cynical than Maddox. He is the hookup where Maddox is the dating. He is the sexual being when his best friend is the “boyfriend”. He is the practical guy who uses sex as stress relief, where Maddox is the easy optimism prayer who doesn’t sleep around.

“Just friends. As always. He is my best friend”

Both MCs are nearly 30 years old and, as grown experienced men, they have been through a couple of serious and intense relationships. They, as gay military men, have waited for the DADT policy to end, and they have faced family rejection and all kind of dangers together. So they know who they are, they know each other and they have lived their lives. They just need to figure out what to do now, how to face their friendship.

I really loved the book’s structure. Because the seriousness of the present is perfectly mixed with the hotness of the past. Steamy past that is cut in critical moments leaving you drooling and wanting more. So much more.
That present/past frame becomes full mode present with the developing of one of the sweetest, challenging (for them) and natural love story I’ve read lately.

The UST, the jealousy and the denial in this book were delicious.

This is my first time reading Annabeth Albert and I really enjoyed the writing. The friends to lovers thing were perfectly executed and felt natural. They have been friends for a while but not both being single at the same time, so even if the attraction was there they didn’t act or react on this matter. Not at first, at least.

I loved Ben being in denial. Funny and cute as hell. And even if Maddox seems to be the one who has all figured out, he is not. He didn’t want to go deeply into his feelings…

So he is nearly as scared as Ben is.

My favorite things in this story:

  • Very, very likable characters, with their flaws and their problems. Hot alpha males that I really loved.
  • The sex scenes were terrific, perfectly dosed and ridiculously hot. I blushed a lot. Big lust in my case, and it’s not always easy to me. These two are dirty.
  • The mix between sweet, dirty and sad/hard moments. Even if I would say this book is not too angsty, it contains hard things to face, sad situations and serious issues that are perfectly measured with the romantic aspect.

So, I’m reading the first two installments. Both couples made a cameo here but I need more. I especially want to know about the guy who said this:

“Aww. Our favorite odd not-a-couple is back together”

Yeah, it was Apollo and knowing he has kids it’s making me nothing but eager. I love MM stories with kids. Recommended!

I recommended this book!imageedit_44_8150275859
