Atonement (The Protectors #6) by Sloane Kennedy

This is book 6 in the in the “Protectors” series and just like all the other ones…

 I absolutely loved this one.

This time it is Dante and Magnus’ turn.

We have been introduced to Magnus in the previous books. He is a 41 year old (former) Texas Ranger, who is still very much hurting over the loss of his daughter. His daughter disappeared when she was 17 years old after she ran away from home. She took her, then 3-year-old, son with her. After searching and hoping for 2 years, it has now become very clear, that even though his grandson Matty was saved by Tate, his daughter did not survive. Magnus is really struggling with the fact, that he will never know what exactly happened to his daughter, but thankfully he has the love and support of a whole new family.

Dante was introduced in the previous book as a security guard for young Matty. Dante has a horrible past of his own and he tends to burry his past, by acting like a man-slut. When Dante is first introduced to Matty’s grandfather Magnus, he is shocked by the attraction he feels for the man. He does his best to flirt with him and to try to get into man’s pants. He doesn’t care if Magnus is gay or straight or bi…he just wants in there.

That’s not how Magnus feels, though. He may be a bit surprised by the fact that he feels some attraction for Dante, but he is mostly annoyed with Dante’s slutty ways. Especially after catching the man in the act a few times.

When Magnus has to go home to Texas to testify in a high-profile case and Dante is ordered as his security detail, things between the two of them start to change. Magnus becomes more and more aware of his growing feelings for Dante and Dante himself starts to see different sides of Magnus. The sexual tension between them was delicious and when these two came together, they were wicked hot !!!

The sex scenes between this men were the best I have read in a Sloane Kennedy book so far…and that’s saying something, because Sloane sure knows how to write a good sex scene !!Even though Magnus has always figured himself straight, he doesn’t hold back when he wants something and he surely wants Dante.

Things aren’t easy, though. Dante struggles with a lot of self-loathing, so Magnus really has to work to earn his trust. When Dante receives a phone-call that will change his life…Magnus is right there with him, for him to lean on….just like he promised.

“I just…I wanted you to see that I was more than that. That I could be someone you could…”....“Someone you could lean on when you were tired of standing on your own.”

Magnus and Dante’s story was at time heartbreaking, but it was also very sweet, fun and hot. They showed that together, they were a force to be reckoned with.

“Can we be done with this talking shit and get to the stuff I’m going to kick ass at in this relationship”

 BRILLIANT…LOVED IT…CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THESE BOYS…

OH GOD, THESE TWO ARE SO HOT TOGETHER…*fanning myself*

This book opens with Dom and Seth back in Italy and Seth is totally stressing about having to marry a woman, the daughter of another powerful Italian family. After the wedding, hey both go to New York where Dom is waiting for instructions on a ‘hit’ and the training up of Seth in preparation to be the new Don.

                                                    DOM

I loved the first book but think I enjoyed this one even more as we see the relationship developing between them.
Dom is more bossy, controlling and dominant than ever but I seriously can’t get enough of him….I even found his obsessive jealousy hot!!

                                                              SETH

Seth certainly knows how to get a reaction out of him and some of the scenes between them were so funny…I especially loved the Nightclub scene and the whole lap dance thing.
And the sex scenes are again totally hot!! These Authors write some of the most erotic M/M scenes.
But along the way, you can definitely feel the relationship getting more intense.

They can’t escape the Mafia life though and when one of the ‘family’ pays a visit things to take a violent turn.
I loved the ending, especially with Seth eventually deciding to man up.
I’ve read the blurb for the next one and am really looking forward to it.
Taking a break to read some M/F but I can’t stay away for long and will be back to my boys very soon.

Cannot recommend highly enough if you like dark, intense, smoking hot M/M action!!!

Good, but... it did not sweep me off my feet like I thought it would.

I had a bit of a hard time to rate this book because I have some mixed feelings about it.Altogether I liked it and I really enjoyed some parts of it, but others… not so much.

Venezuelan model Mario Blanco///Zain:

On the positive side, there would definitely be Dom. Honestly? What’s not to love about a gorgeous, dangerous, somewhat unpredictable guy with a bit of an attitude, who sometimes shows his vulnerable side, especially when it comes to the rejection by his own father?

Yes, I know, basically, he is a killer, but still…

Seth, on the other hand, has attitude, in spades… Unfortunately, not the one that struck a chord with me. This guy was most of the time annoying as hell.

Overall too shallow, with the inclination to put too much emphasis on outward appearances. Well, that was something that bothered me a bit in general about this book. Sometimes I even got the impression I was reading a fashion magazine rather than a mafia story, but that only as a side note, so back to Seth. Kidnapped as the youngest son of a Sicilian Mafia don by the Chinese Triad, being tortured and held captive for several weeks…

… and the first thing that came to his mind when he is being rescued is that the suit his kidnappers gave him was somewhat ill-fitting compared to the one of his savior (Dom). Seriously? Oh, come on. (Maybe you can imagine my eye-roll…) Most of the time his behavior was that of a spoiled brat, not to say a drama queen, and every time he insisted that Dom should not treat him like a baby, I wanted to snap at him “Oh, yeah? Then don’t behave like one!”

Thank God, it got better towards the end, at least a bit, as well as the development of the relationship between Dom and Seth. At first, I didn’t really feel the connection between these two, especially because Dom had no problem with sharing Seth. Of course, it all based on sex at the beginning and since this is just the first book in a series I guess it will deepen, so I don’t want to judge it too hard.

Well, said sex  can only be described with one word:

Admittedly, at the beginning, it was somewhat dub-con cough, but since Seth could enjoy it, I could do the same. 😉 Surprisingly, the fact that Dom and Seth are half-brothers didn’t bother me overly much, either. Surprisingly, I should add, because normally, I’m a bit sensitive in that regard.

The writing style itself was okay, I guess, but the metaphors that the authors used were sometimes definitely a tad OTT for my liking, e.g.

“He seemed as shy as a stallion ready to be mounted for the first time. Yearning for that saddle, but not ready to accept it.”

Umm, as you can imagine, that got another eye-roll… Thank God, it didn’t happen overly much.

.:

So, I love to read a dark and twisted story now and then, and the ending made me curious about what will happen next, of course, I will go straight on to the next book.

The Price of Dick by Dan Skinner

Asshole characters exert a strange fascination on me. They are a weakness and a guilty pleasure. But they only appeal to me when there is lots of groveling involved until they finally redeem their selves. The Price of Dick didn’t turn out the way I wished. It’s not that kind of Romance. There was no groveling, let alone redemption. Needless to say, I was left disappointed. I’m blaming this on me though for having the pretension to assume that this story would be like many others.

JJ was a doormat and he knew it. He was a doormat infatuated with Dick and that is where my disappointment with JJ solely stands. Don’t take me wrong,  JJ wasn’t manipulative and bad as Dick but he had an agenda too. He could have kicked Dick out of his life at any time, but no. He liked sharing the bills, he liked having Dick around, he liked Dick’s charismatic act to recruit new guys and finally, he saw a chance, in Dick to up his game.

And Dick? Well, Dick was a DICK with all capital letters, a scoundrel. He did unforgivable things. Dick needed a place where he could stop the macho pretense, a place where he could let the barriers down and be gay. JJ was his golden ticket. Such a sweetheart.

It was a hard story to swallow. In my view, the fucked up situation was a mutual arrangement where both would benefit. And even though I was aware that the exploration was consensual by both parties I could not take it easily, because this deal was not well-balanced, JJ was always the weakest link. He couldn’t see it, though; bloke was blind like a bat. It took too long for JJ to wake up and realize that he didn’t need that, that he could do much better.

I think I had a reverse reaction here. Instead of being mad at Dick I was mad at JJ for taking all that crap from Dick. One of the things that nagged me the most listened to Dick make a pass at other guys with his bullshit I-am-not- gay speech in every fucking photo shoot,

Gawd, give me strength!

I am glad JJ found someone to give him a push. I don’t think he would have pulled his shit together on his own. Alex grounded JJ. Alex was the one who came up with the idea to transfer/backup the photos. Alex pushed him to find a new place. Alex opened JJ eyes about his financial situation and finally, he was the one who thought about calling an attorney to fix that big mess. Summing it up, the grand finale all down did Alex.

This book drove me mad! We really deserved that HEA.

I am not sure my kindle would survive, otherwise.
